Empowering stakeholders through concussion education

The concussion healthcare team at Tufts University consists of 6 athletic trainers as the first line of defense for identifying head injuries, 2 team physicians overseeing the return to play protocol, and 1 physician who conducts concussion research. Should athletes require specialized care beyond that scope, they’re referred to a local concussion clinic. In addition to the healthcare team, Tufts University educates coaches and athletes on concussions and the importance of reporting symptoms so they can take an active role in concussion care.

Tufts University’s concussion program covers all 28 varsity teams and select club sports including men’s and women’s rugby and ultimate frisbee. They use ImPACT baseline and post-injury testing to paint a picture of athletes’ cognition and use the data to make more informed decisions.

More baseline testing, less administration time.

As a result of the NCAA settlement, the Arrington agreement has brought additional concussion protocol requirements for NCAA member schools including baseline testing all student athletes every year. Thanks to ImPACT Applications’ affordable pricing, Tufts University was able to comply with these requirements while staying within their budget.

Using their historical group baseline testing model, baseline testing every athlete would have been an arduous task. Thankfully, Tufts University had access to FDA-cleared, at-home ImPACT baseline testing and were able to successfully baseline test 800+ athletes.

“At-home ImPACT baseline testing is the easiest and most efficient way to comply with the requirements brought on by the NCAA settlement. We are able to baseline test more athletes without having to spend time coordinating group baseline testing.”
