“One-Stop-Shop” for Concussion Care
Inova Sports Medicine consists of a multidisciplinary team of dedicated concussion care specialists including neuropsychologists, primary care sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, patient care navigators, and rehab professionals including physical and vestibular therapists. Each member of the concussion care team has completed specific concussion care training through ImPACT Applications such as the Credentialed ImPACT Consultant (CIC) and ImPACT Trained Athletic Trainer (ITAT) program. In addition to their robust team of concussion specialists in-house, Inova Sports Medicine Concussion Program has built a strong referral network in the community including neuro-optometrists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychologists, and psychiatrists for patients who require more specialized care.
“We act as the ‘point guard’ for patients in terms of diagnosing their concussion, identifying the clinical profile(s), and determining what management strategies and/or therapies they’re going to need for recovery.”
Only 21% of Youth Concussions Happen on the Field.
Inova Sports Medicine Concussion Program sees patients ages 5+ for all mechanisms of injury (MOI). Even though “sports medicine” is in their name, they often see concussions resulting from car accidents, slip and fall injuries, playground incidents, and other non-sport related activities. They utilize both ImPACT and ImPACT Pediatric in addition to other clinical tools to be able to create tailored treatment plans and monitor progress throughout recovery.
“ImPACT Applications’ tools put data behind patients’ improvements to show them they are making progress. This helps reduce anxiety patients have around their recovery.”
Driving Downstream Revenue
Inova Sports Medicine has increased their patient volume by offering ImPACT baseline testing not only to existing patients, but opening it up to the greater community. They have also teamed up with local sports leagues to bring baseline testing to their athletes. Test takers have the option to complete the test in the clinic or remotely, thanks to ImPACT baseline testing that’s FDA cleared to be taken at home. When necessary, the concussion care team goes mobile to bring ImPACT baseline testing, including the necessary equipment, to off-site locations throughout the community.
Athletes and community members who took an ImPACT baseline test through Inova Sports Medicine Concussion Program oftentimes return to them for follow-up care in the event of a head injury. Inova Sports Medicine Concussion Program also leverages reimbursement for neuropsychological testing when ImPACT or ImPACT Pediatric is used as part of the evaluation.
The Future of Concussion Care
In order to adapt to patient needs and the changing healthcare landscape, Inova Sports Medicine has launched telemedicine visits with the concussion program. Now, new and established patients have the option to come into the clinic or opt for a telemedicine appointment. Should they choose a telemedicine appointment, ImPACT post-injury testing is administered remotely and a complete evaluation is carried out via telemedicine.
“ImPACT via telemedicine has been pretty seamless. It’s easy to administer, saves time, and patients have been able to complete it successfully.”
In addition to staying current with the latest technology, Inova Sports Medicine Concussion Program is committed to advancing concussion care through research. Their team members and research staff are actively collecting data and publishing research articles that advance the education, assessment, management, and treatment of sport-related concussion beyond the scope of their clinic.
