Joseph Maroon named to Fitness Hall of Fame

Joseph Maroon, a neurosurgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has been inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame. Dr. Maroon, 69, of Sewickley, has completed more than 70 triathlons, including the Super Bowl of triathlons, the Ironman in Hawaii, three times. He last competed in the Ironman -- which consists of a 2.4-mile open ocean swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a 26.2-mile run -- in 2008. Dr. Maroon finished 19th in his age division with a time of 15 hours, 57 minutes and 20 seconds. He plans to compete in the Ironman again in October.
The team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dr. Maroon is a nationally recognized expert in the treatment of sports-related head and spine injuries. The National Fitness Hall of Fame was established in Chicago in 2005. Previous inductees are Dr. Kenneth Cooper and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
