Community Work and Involvement

David R. Wiercisiewski, MD, a Board Certified physiatrist, has 15 years of experience treating patients who have suffered brain injury and have had persistent symptoms or deficits as a result of that injury. He has also seen pediatric and adult sports concussion patients since he arrived in Charlotte in 1993. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina for two terms and has dedicated his career to the subspecialty of brain injury with a personal interest in sports concussion management. He has given numerous national, regional and local presentations on the topic of sports concussion management. His personal goal is to increase the awareness of this particular sports injury by educating the athletes, parents, coaches, and other interested members of the greater Charlotte community. By raising awareness, the concussion injury can be more reliably identified and then more appropriately managed. To request a talk or presentation to your organization on sport concussion management, please contact Dr. Wiercisiewski at (704)831-4323.

ImPACT History:

CNSA introduced the first sports concussion program to the greater Charlotte area in February 2007 in an effort to improve the standard of care for this injury. The Carolina Sports Concussion Program, under the direction of David R. Wiercisiewski, MD, was created to improve the management of sports concussion injuries in athletes of all ages and to expand the awareness of concussion in sports. The ImPACT test serves as the cornerstone in the objective evaluation of the athlete as part of this program. Since introducing this program to the community, CNSA has treated numerous amateur and professional athletes ranging from middle school and high school age through collegiate and professional sports in the North and South Carolina area.
