About Elite Sports Medicine
Elite Sports Medicine (ESM) is the sports medicine department of Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Our clinic has been designed to treat the athlete and all of their needs. Under the direction of Dr. Carl Nissen and Dr. Kelsey Logan, ESM has developed the premier concussion management center in central Connecticut. Our clinic utilizes ImPACT as a tool to piece together the puzzle concussion.
Dr. Nissen is a sports medicine trained orthopaedic physician who has been utilizing the ImPACT program now for the past several years, both in his practice and as the team physician at Trinity College. Dr. Nissen has been a leader in concussion management in Connecticut working with the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference in educating coaches and athletic trainers on the management of concussions.
Dr. Logan is a sports medicine trained internal medicine physician and pediatrician who utilized ImPACT in her practice at the University of Wisconsin as a team physician and currently in her practice with Elite Sports Medicine. Dr. Logan has been asked to lecture to physician groups across the State on the injury of concussion and it's management.
The physicians at ESM work in concert with the patient and their parents, the school administration, the athletic trainer and their coaches to coordinate the best care possible for the athlete. This coordinated effort allows for the best possible outcome for the athlete and insures a safe return to play as quickly as possible. Our clinic is located in Avon, CT on Rt. 10 just a 1/4 mile north from the intersection of Rt. 44.
Schools Using ImPACT
With the addition of the web based testing program ESM will add to it's list of schools utilizing ImPACT. Currently under the direction of the physicians at ESM Simsbury High School, Farmington High School and Trinity College utilize the ImPACT testing program. We are currently recruiting schools who are interested in adding ImPACT to their athletic program, as well as, creating a baseline testing center for local youth sports programs from the age of 13 and older.
Community Work and Involvement
Under the direction of Mark McCarthy, ESM has been educating the local schools and youth sport programs on the injury of concussion. Mark has presented to the coaches of local high schools, hockey clubs, parent groups, sports medicine students, athletic trainers and school adminstrators. Our goal is to educate as many people as possible on the injury of concussion.
ImPACT History:
Dr. Carl Nissen has been an ImPACT user since 2002 in his practice and as team physician. Carl has presented at multiple programs on the use of ImPACT and concussion management. He is currently the Director of Elite Sports Medicine and is a co-founder of the sports medicine program at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. It is Carl's vision to have a center which specializes in concussion mangement to insure proper care and treatment of the injured athlete.
Dr. Kelsey Logan completed her sports medicine fellowship at the University of Wisconsin last spring. While working with the Badger athletic program she incorporated ImPACT as part of her management protocol for the injuired athletes. Kelsey joined ESM in the fall of 2006 and in her short time here she has become a leader in concussion management utilizing ImPACT. She continues to educate her fellow physicians and medical professionals on the injury of concussion and how it is managed. Kelsey has a strong interest in research and with the assistance of the ImPACT program hopes to add to the ongoing research on this mysterious injury.
