OHSU Sports Medicine

OHSU Sports Medicine is the only comprehensive sports medicine program in Oregon with extensive programs in teaching, research and outreach in addition to excellence in sports medicine clinical care and injury prevention…including concussion management. Additionally, we are the only program in Oregon with a Sports Medicine specialty training program. We have sports medicine specialists in the surgical and non-surgical care of sports medicine injuries and problems in athletes and recreationalists of all ages.
Our goal is to keep people moving and engaged in healthy active lifestyles... And to return athletes safely to their sport as quickly as possible.

OHSU Sports Concussion Program is an important part of our overall Sports Medicine program. We have the only sports concussion program of its kind in Oregon. We have a multidisciplinary program that addresses every aspect of Sports Concussions from on-field assessment and physician evaluations to rehabilitation and return to academics and sports. Our Sports Concussion Team includes specially- trained athletic trainers, medical assistants, sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/cognitive therapists, counselors, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuropsychologists.

Who we are:

OHSU Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation is a team of healthcare professionals including Doctors, Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers and other medical and rehabilitation specialist. Injuries are an unfortunate but common part of athletics. Our team works together with athletes, coaches, and parents to help athletes manage injuries and return athletes to their sport in a safe manner.

Services we offer:

OHSU Sports Medicine Clinic: If you have sustained an injury and are unsure what to do about it, we want to help you. We specialize in sports injuries and sports-related medical problems. You can be seen by a Sports Medicine Physician within 24-48 hours of your injury by calling our Sports Medicine Hotline at 503-494-4000.
Trainer Injury Evaluation and Management Sessions. A Certified Athletic Trainer is available to evaluate your injury and help develop a plan of care for rapid and safe return to your game. This occurs at our OHSU clinic. Sessions are thirty minutes long and cost a flat rate of $30. This a good option for those who don't have a school trainer, do not have insurance to see a doctor or physical therapist or who want sport specific training and rehabilitation programs.

ImPACT Testing:

This is a computer based neurocognitive test designed to evaluate concussions. A concussion is a common, yet mild traumatic brain injury resulting from a force or impact to the head. This is an under diagnosed injury that can potentially lead to serious consequences down the road if not managed properly. This test helps healthcare professionals make better decisions regarding concussion management. We are available to test athletes on an individual basis at OHSU or to administer multiple tests for a team at your school.

You can make an individual appointment to get ImPact testing with an Athletic Trainer for $30 for baseline or post -injury testing. For post-concussion testing, you will also need to make a separate appointment with a physician to be medically cleared.

High School Athletic Event Medical Coverage:

Often times, we are seen on the sidelines of an athletic event. During these events our role is to facilitate the health and safety of the athletes. Our team of skilled Athletic Trainers are available to provide this coverage to you.

The easiest way to reach us is by calling our Sports Medicine Hotline: 503-494-4000.

By calling this number, you may schedule appointments with a Sports Medicine Doctor, injury evaluation by an Athletic Trainer, or inquire about ImPACT testing.

Community Work and Involvement

Our concussion team is lead by Dr Jim Chesnutt, the medical director of OHSU Sports Medicine Program and Jennifer Wilhelm, DPT. Dr Chesnutt serves as the co-director of the Oregon Concussion Awareness and Management Program (OCAMP) , which is a state-wide effort to standardize the identification and management of concussions. OHSU serves as one of the three regional concussion consultation centers in Oregon, serving the Portland metropolitan area and the whole NW region of Oregon and SW Washington, including the Willamette Valley from Salem north to The Dalles and the coast from Lincoln City northward. The other regional concussion centers are Slocum Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Eugene( Central to Southern Oregon valley and coast), and The Center in Bend ( Central and Eastern Oregon). Of course, at OHSU we are always available for consultation and assistance to all parts of Oregon and SW Washington.

ImPact testing is an important part of our program. We help athletes and their school programs obtain baseline ImPact concussion testing at their school or club or at OHSU. We utilize these baseline tests to assess and manage head injuries and concussions. Post- concussion ImPact testing can be performed as part of a comprehensive concussion evaluation by one of our sports medicine physicians at OHSU Sports Medicine Clinics or if your school has a concussion program, can be performed by an athletic trainer at your school with appropriate physician consultation.

If you think you or one of your athletes have been injured and need to be seen by one of our Sports Medicine specialist, please call our OHSU Sports Medicine Hotline at 503-494-4000 to schedule an appointment to be seen usually the same day or next day for new injuries.
